Interconnected though they might be and although they were now communicating and aware of each other in new ways, they began to realize that to truly be a town they had to build it together. Communication by itself was not sufficient for community. A level of mutual participation, caring, and co-creativity was also required. For the town was more than just a collection of houses and neighborhoods; it was a collaborative creation, a shared consciousness and identity.

This, I think, is at least some part of why otherkind are not "a community". Perhaps we once were, but I think it's not been that way for quite some time now.

Your thoughts?

There's been some Discourse™ lately on Tumblr about whether it is possible to stop being otherkin in any circumstances. All parties seem to basically agree that if you can easily "turn it off" then you weren't actually otherkin (or some specific thing wasn't actually a kintype) in the first place, but do not agree on whether it is possible to stop or change as a result of a long process of personal transformation ("ego alteration", one participant dubbed it). Your thoughts?

Previously I mentioned writing a poem that touches on Otherkin issues.  "Soul Cravings" has now been posted on my LiveJournal if you want to read it.

(Once a month I hold a live poetry event there.  People give me ideas and I write poems based on those.  September's theme was DNA, genetic engineering, and evolution.  I happened to get a prompt about unusual dietary needs and that got me thinking about how body and soul aren't always on the same page regarding food.)

[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith mentioned in a previous post that she's doing a poetry fishbowl. The current one is about "DNA, genetic engineering, and evolution."

In that line of thinking, I thought I'd throw this out as sort of discussion fodder:

How do you think Otherkin came about? Don't be afraid to go into detail (I don't think DreamWidth has a word count limit to their comments, so go for it).
